Our history
Modern private health care has been evolving in the UK since the mid-1970s, and General Healthcare Group (GHG) has grown and developed as part of that. Follow our development from our first hospital, the Harley Street Clinic, to our present position as the country’s leading private health care provider.
GHG timeline: 1970 – Present
1970: AMI, a leading US for-profit hospital provider, acquires its first hospital, the Harley Street Clinic.
1980s 1983: AMI group has grown to 13 hospitals. 1984: The group’s psychiatric division forms. 1985: First brain injuries centre opens at Grafton Manor. 1988: AMI floats on London Stock Exchange. The health services division emerges.
1990s 1990: Generale des Eaux (later Vivendi) acquires the group. 1991: UHS bought by Amicus. Psychiatric division begins expansion. 1993: AMI renamed BMI Healthcare and new corporate group named General Healthcare Group. 1997: Funds managed by Cinven Ltd acquire GHG. Cinven also acquires French sister company, Generale de Santé. 1998: GHG merges with Amicus Healthcare Group. The group's portfolio of over 40 hospitals develops through acquisition and construction.
2000s 2000: Funds managed by Cinven Ltd sell their investment to Funds advised by BC Partners, one of Europe's leading private equity companies. 2005: BMI Health Services, Occupational Health division, sold to Capita Group Plc. 2006: GHG acquired by a consortium led by Network Healthcare Holdings Limited (Netcare), a South African company listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE). 2008: GHG increases the number of BMI acute care hospitals to 57.
Today
GHG continues its acquisition and expansion programme with new hospitals, private medical centres, clinics and consulting centres. As well as increasing our reach around the UK, we continue to add enhanced services and new technology to our offering.
