A day in the life
A day in the life of Anne Haworth, Oncology Sister at The Beardwood Hospital
Oncology and chemotherapy treatments present particular challenges in patient care.
When Anne went to work at the Beardwood, one of the smaller BMI hospitals, there was no oncology department. This provided the opportunity to create an environment specifically designed around the needs of oncology patients. The result is a bright, fresh unit with large windows opening onto the hospital gardens. The rooms have restful pictures and a plasma TV which helps keep patients diverted while they undergo their chemotherapy treatment. Patient safety and comfort always comes first.
A patient commented: “From my point of view as a patient, Anne is an asset to the department. She is very welcoming, pleasant and professional, and always does the right things at the right time.”
Every Monday, Anne participates in the hospital multidisciplinary team meeting when they discuss and plan the week ahead.
Anne says, “In BMI Healthcare I am much more involved in decision making than where I was before; my role has definitely changed for the better, in the public sector it is often hard to implement things, in BMI we are well supported by the management team and there is a well-structured chain of command. There is an atmosphere of friendliness and co-operation.”
